May is Mental Health Month: Which Song is My Anthem?

OK, so this post does a couple of things. One is the May is Mental Health Month, and the topic for May 30th is naming which song is your anthem. The questions posed are how does it make you feel now and is it worth putting back on your playlist. This topic is out of order, but who cares?

My anthem has never left my playlist and it’s Bill Withers’ Lean On Me, which he wrote. It makes feel like a million bucks. It came out in 1972, the right era for me. Just like back then, nowadays I still feel more hopeful for the human race, or least a little less disgusted about it.

There have been over 100 covers of Lean On Me and I’ve heard only a couple. I looked at a list yesterday and found one cover done by the California Raisins, believe it or not, released in 1987. I listened to the first few seconds and it’s actually a cover of a cover. Club Nouveau did that in 1986.

For the record, Weird Al Yankovic has never done a parody of Lean On Me. I’m not sure a parody of a song could ever be an anthem, but stranger things happen.

I will admit I have a favorite for a cover of this song and it’s by Keb’ Mo’ released in 2022.

I do lean on Sena quite a bit, which you can see about halfway through this tandem juggling act a little over 2 years ago.
