Well, the big news, at least for me, is that Uncle Ed (Unka Led?) did a long version of the shout outs last night—and the first one was Jim the Shrink, which Big Mo had been announcing first for a good while. I about fell out of my chair. I thought after Big Mo retired, I’d never hear that again on the Friday night blues show.
I’ll allow there might be another Jim the Shrink out there, but Big Mo himself told the story about Jim the Shrink on his penultimate Friday night show on May 9, 2026, in which he gave a colorful and more detailed Shout Outs list:
“The other big feature of his show last night was a more colorful and detailed Shout Outs list—and I’ve always wondered if I was on it. Now I’m pretty sure I’ve been on it for a while. It turns out Jim the Shrink is probably me. He told a short anecdote about how he first heard from a guy who emailed him about where he could find MayRee’s hand-battered catfish. It really tickled Big Mo that he’d got “a clinical psychologist” to bite on this faux sponsor gag. That happened about 4 years ago. He mentioned an idea he had about designing a tee shirt about MayRee. That led to me writing a blog post (my blog is Go Retire Psychiatrist) suggesting a design and making a fake picture of me wearing it. It never caught on, for some reason. But I made the Shout Outs list.”

Anyway, I want to mention a couple of songs that got my attention last night. One of them was cover by Eric Clapton of a song by Robert Johnson, “Milkcow’s Calf Blues.” This is one I wish had heard last month, because June was National Dairy Month. I didn’t understand hardly any of the lyrics, but I found a YouTube with them.
The other song is “My Dog” by Elvin Bishop. It reminded me of a dog named Moose that, although it was not mine, belonged to a friend of our family a long time ago when my little brother and I were kids. I remembered it because the dog was pretty much the opposite of the dog in Bishop’s song. Here’s an anecdote about that from 2020 post “Signs of Anecdotage”:
“Speaking of friends, we occasionally had dinner with an older couple, RellaMae and Ray, who owned a gargantuan mongrel dog, part bull mastiff and part mastodon. His name was Moose. When he was tied to a post out in the back yard, he spent a lot of his time barking and snarling at anything living that passed by, especially the paperboy. On the other hand, he played like a puppy with me and my brother. At the dinner table, he would lay his head on my knee, mournfully staring at every forkful and leaving a pond of drool on my pants.”
By the way, I sent Ed English a message to his email, which he announced last night on the blues show was how you could get in touch with him at KCCK. I just asked him why his nickname, which sounds like Uncle Ed, is spelled “Unka Led.” If you already know the answer, drop a comment.
