Spring Flowers Photo Quiz!

Spring Flowers Photo Quiz!

Sena’s daffodil and crocus are coming up in the garden, so I took 3 snapshots, each with a different camera: my iPhone 17 pro; a Canon point and shoot; and a Nikon D3400. Pick which one you think is best and comment.

Happy Easter!

We need to cover food appreciation during this month because this Mental Health Awareness Month and it’s on the calendar for today. • Red-Tailed Hawk Chick in the Nest!12 May 2026
Today, Sena raced in from the garden in the back yard and alerted me that she could see something in the Red-tailed Hawk nest, maybe a chick! We haven’t been able to see much for days now. It was spitting rain and windy so the video is pretty shaky. But the adult hawk is standing … Continue reading "Red-Tailed Hawk Chick in the Nest!"
  • Today is National Hospital Day and National Limerick Day!12 May 2026
Today, in view of this being Mental Health Awareness Month, I’m calling attention to other national special days. One of them is National Hospital Day (and there’s also a National Hospital Week, which runs from May 10-16 this year). And I learned that this is also National Limerick Day, in honor of the English author … Continue reading "Today is National Hospital Day and National Limerick Day!"
  • New York City Memories11 May 2026
The recent New York Post story about the man who shoved a 76-year-old retired schoolteacher down a flight of subway stairs caught my attention. The assailant had been sent to Bellevue for a court-ordered psychiatric assessment for similar agitated behavior not long before this assault. My understanding from news stories is that he was held … Continue reading "New York City Memories"
  • Getting Enough Sleep for the Most Important Person in the World: You11 May 2026
So, what’s on the menu for Mental Health Awareness today? It’s what some experts call sleep hygiene and there are all kinds of lists on the internet telling you how to get enough sleep. I think you’re OK with focusing on helpful tips that seem right for your age, your temperament, and your life and … Continue reading "Getting Enough Sleep for the Most Important Person in the World: You"
  • Svengoolie Show Movie: “First Men in the Moon”10 May 2026
Svengoolie Intro: “Calling all stations! Clear the air lanes! Clear all air lanes for the big broadcast!” I thought the 1964 film, “First Men in the Mood” was a hoot, mostly because of the antics of Joseph Cavor (Lionel Jeffries), who could yell incessantly “Briggs!” more than a dozen times, at the guy who was … Continue reading "Svengoolie Show Movie: “First Men in the Moon”"

Psychiatric Times More Than Medicine: A Journey of Juggling

National Weather Service

“God, how we get our fingers in each other’s clay.” --Ray Bradbury, from his novel Something Wicked This Way Comes

It is wise to direct your anger towards problems-not people; to focus your energies on answers-not excuses.-William Arthur Ward

Plan for retirement, even if you don’t plan to retire. This means sound financial planning, developing other interests, and nurturing your relationships with significant others. Retire, even if you are not retired. Take enough time off periodically, and completely, with no connections to work, so that you can feel emotionally free from concerns about patients and practice. Of course, there is no reason to retire if you really love your work and relationships just as they are.-H. Steven Moffic, MD See original article in Psychiatric Times
