We’ve gotten a visitor to Sena’s garden. It’s a brilliant male Indigo Bunting. While it looks like it’s a brilliant blue color, it’s really a gray bird. Like the Blue Jay, its feathers don’t have blue pigment, but they refract sunlight. This makes them look blue.
There are actually two distinct species of bunting. The Blue Bunting has chunky bill and is native to Central and South America. The Indigo Bunting has a more conical bill and lives in North America. There’s a web site that helps you tell the difference.
Sena’s garden is growing, just like all her other gardens have over the years. Every place we move, she cultivates a gorgeous a little park which attracts many different kinds of birds.
Most gardeners will recognize what Sena has planted. I just call them plants—but they’re gorgeous.
