Dr. Jim Fitness Test

, , ,

I thought I would share my personal fitness test. I’m pretty regular, especially in the last couple of months since I found out I gained 20 pounds after I retired from my job as consulting psychiatrist to University of Iowa Health Care. Sena and I both exercise and we’re being careful about our diet (kale three times a day with spunk water).

The YouTube video doesn’t show everything I do, but it’s pretty close. I don’t do the Griddy every day because it’s strenuous, mainly because I’m still not doing it right.

Allen Davis invented the Griddy and I definitely have not perfected it.

    1. Hi, you’re the 4th or 5th person who didn’t get my joke about the kale and spunk water. Sorry about that! I guess I sort of dead-panned that too well. Looks like you didn’t finish a sentence, though. Thanks, anyway.

    1. If you’re referring to the kale and spunk water thing, that was a joke! You’re the 4th person to do that. I gotta work on my delivery. Thanks, anyway!

  3. The detail about kale three times a day with “spunk water” had me chuckling—sounds like a retirement diet that’s equal parts discipline and personality. Getting back into a routine after gaining weight is no small feat, but your approach makes it feel more like a creative project than a chore.

    1. Hey, you’re the third person to not get that joke about the kale and spunk water. I was just kidding; we don’t really do that! Thanks, anyway!

  4. That mention of kale three times a day with spunk water is a surprisingly specific dietary punch. Retiring from a mentally demanding job like psychiatry must shift how one thinks about bodily upkeep, so this test seems like a natural refocus. Wishing you and Sena steady progress on the Griddy.

  5. The mention of eating kale three times a day with “spunk water” made me pause—definitely a unique approach to retirement nutrition. My own post-career routine has a similarly quirky vegetable habit, though mine involves roasting Brussels sprouts until they’re practically charcoal.
