Frog in Our Window Well!

,

Last night, Sena kept hearing something tapping against the window in the window well. Then she saw a little critter sliding down the window. It was a frog that probably jumped into the window well and couldn’t get out. I got a photo of it although it’s a little hard to see because of the window film.

OK, you probably know what’s coming because this is a pretty common occurrence. It prompted me to look it up on the web. I found the most common reference, which is the story about the frog in the well, which has Japanese, Chinese, and Hindu origins.

The basic saying is: “A frog in a well knows nothing of the great ocean.” There are variations, like the addition of “…but it knows how blue the sky is.” You get the idea.

When I searched the term “frog in the window well” I got a number of articles, one of which was long and turned out to be a cleverly written advertisement by a company selling window well covers.

There was a Reddit thread with a bold caption about by somebody wanting to know what do with 16 frogs in their window well. Frog legs fry?

How do frogs (or toads) get into your window wells in the first place? I guess they jump in there because it’s shady and they have a lot of bugs to eat in there. But they end up trying to escape.

This is the other side of the situation in which birds (often robins) fly into the window well and tap on the window with their beaks, fighting their reflections. Should we just wait for a bird to fly in there and eat the frog for lunch, if it can be distracted from attacking their reflections? That would be a circle of life thing, wouldn’t it? Any quotes about that?

Should we put in a tree branch or a long 2X4 so the frog can climb out? Is a frog smart enough to figure that out?

Should one of us jump in there or use a ladder to climb in and try to catch the frog without squishing it and toss it out of the window well? What’s your bet it would just hop right back in there, even before we get a chance to climb back out? That would make a great comedy skit!

Come up with proverbs about this. I will not be offering cash prizes for them.

  1. Poor little guy. When we had a baby skunk in our window well we lowered down a bucket and waited for it to climb in investigating and pulled it back out. Might work for a frog too.

    1. You are brave to rescue a skunk. The frog got out on its own, apparently.
