Reblog of “Ten Month Countdown to Retirement”

This is a special reblog that always pangs me when I think of it. It was when I started the 10-month countdown to my retirement from my career as a consultation-liaison psychiatrist at University of Iowa Health Care.

It’s not easy leaving what I’d come to consider a calling. That was hard. It’s being a teacher that I miss the most. I’ll never really get past that and I don’t want to forget it.

In this post, I mentioned that I took a stab at private practice psychiatry. I didn’t have any business doing that and I’ll never forget how kind the director of the clinic was when I told him I had to go back to being a teacher. I see he’s retired now too, yet he volunteers his time at a free mental health clinic.

Hard to quit. You have to do it sometime because we always need new leaders. And I’m so proud of them—they’ll never know. I wish them all the best.
