We watched the live-stream newscast of Iowa’s News Now video of Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signing the Iowa state version of the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) bill HF 2676 into law just about an hour ago. U.S. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr was a guest and delivered a short speech in praise of the event.
First, we acknowledge the effort by the Iowa legislature to promote the health of Iowans. What we did not hear was any comment from either Governor Reynolds or HHS Secretary RFK Jr about the controversial section of this bill which will allow Iowa pharmacists to provide ivermectin over-the-counter (without a prescription) for those who would probably want it to treat non-parasitic disease such as Covid-19 infection or cancer, neither of which has been shown by medical science to be treatable by ivermectin.
None of this was a surprise to me although I am disappointed about the anti-science part of the bill. While there have been several partisan-based bills seeking to pass similar bills which were defeated this year, this one unfortunately survived and now has been signed into law.
Nevertheless, I wonder if one reason why nobody mentioned the section about allowing over-the-counter ivermectin is that it is (hopefully) unlikely to be implemented as standard practice by Iowa pharmacists.
