  • Connections Between Psychiatry, Artificiality and Blues Music?10 Jan 2026
I heard a song on the KCCK Big Mo Blues Show that I first heard in June of 2025. The song is “Artificial” by Walter Trout. At first blush, I agree with what I think is the point of the song, which is basically a protest against artificiality which could manifest in a range of … Continue reading "Connections Between Psychiatry, Artificiality and Blues Music?"
  • Snow Squalls Predicted in Iowa Today!10 Jan 2026
The National Weather Service predicts “snow squalls” for parts of eastern Iowa today in the afternoon. Sena recognized the guy in the GIF above as W.C. Fields and wondered if there were any other videos of this scene with audio as well. They aren’t hard to find.
  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day Events 20269 Jan 2026
Here’s a list of events I know of so far regarding the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day: The city of Iowa City has day of service and other events you can find at this link. The city of Coralville has events starting on January 16th and more, which you can learn about … Continue reading "Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day Events 2026"
  • Exercise to Relieve Depression?9 Jan 2026
I’m sure you’ve seen the recently published articles on the web encouraging people to try exercising to treat depression. The articles rely on a new systematic review by the Cochrane Database, which you need to carefully interpret—not necessarily the whole paper; you could just skip to the bottom line in the Authors’ Conclusions: “Authors’ conclusions: Exercise … Continue reading "Exercise to Relieve Depression?"
  • Glue Myself to My Biography8 Jan 2026
There’s a reason for why I so often tell Dad jokes. In keeping with my post from yesterday about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s biographies: I glued myself to my autobiography. You may not believe it, but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. We’ve ordered a couple of biographies about Dr. King. One … Continue reading "Glue Myself to My Biography"
  • A Few Thoughts About the New Biography of Dr. Martin Luther King, “King: A Life”7 Jan 2026
I just learned today about the new biography of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. written by Jonathan Eig. It was published a couple of years ago and I found a lot of YouTube interviews of him. I didn’t look through hardly any of them and saw only one in its entirety, which is below. Like … Continue reading "A Few Thoughts About the New Biography of Dr. Martin Luther King, “King: A Life”"

Psychiatric Times More Than Medicine: A Journey of Juggling

National Weather Service

“God, how we get our fingers in each other’s clay.” --Ray Bradbury, from his novel Something Wicked This Way Comes

It is wise to direct your anger towards problems-not people; to focus your energies on answers-not excuses.-William Arthur Ward

Plan for retirement, even if you don’t plan to retire. This means sound financial planning, developing other interests, and nurturing your relationships with significant others. Retire, even if you are not retired. Take enough time off periodically, and completely, with no connections to work, so that you can feel emotionally free from concerns about patients and practice. Of course, there is no reason to retire if you really love your work and relationships just as they are.-H. Steven Moffic, MD See original article in Psychiatric Times
