Gerber Daisies

Just a short post on the Gerbera Daisy (common name Gerber). Sena planted it in our garden recently and it is firetruck red. They symbolize innocence, purity, and, most of all, cheerfulness.

When I need a little cheering up, I just look at the Gerber Daisies.

  • CDC ACIP Meeting Postponed for Today and Tomorrow18 Mar 2026
I missed the recent notice in the last couple of days that the CDC ACIP meeting was postponed for today and tomorrow. Me and more than a couple dozen people were kept waiting for a half hour before I got suspicious and looked it up. There’s a CIDRAP story posted yesterday that explains the “delay.” … Continue reading "CDC ACIP Meeting Postponed for Today and Tomorrow"
  • 9 Card Cribbage Comedy!17 Mar 2026
Sena’s been after me for weeks to play 9 card cribbage, so because it’s St. Patrick’s Day, I gave in because we might get lucky and the game might be playable. We used a computer scorer developed by somebody who posted about 9 card cribbage (and other cribbage variants) and has a link to a … Continue reading "9 Card Cribbage Comedy!"
  • Iowa Blizzard Update!16 Mar 2026
The blizzard started yesterday evening. I put out the garbage this morning and scraped out a path to our doorstep in case we get the cribbage boards delivered today from Canada. I’m not expecting it. It’s still blowing snow around. The stuff is freezing on the driveway and the sidewalks. I’m surprised the garbage can … Continue reading "Iowa Blizzard Update!"
  • Must Read Post on Real Psychiatry15 Mar 2026
I have a big shout out to Dr. George Dawson, MD for his post on his blog Real Psychiatry about the trolling of psychiatrists on social media. I tried adding links to social media from my blog for a short while and dropped it years ago.
  • Ivermectin Bill Looks Like It’s Dead-For Now14 Mar 2026
This is a quick followup on the progress of Governor Reynolds MAHA bill which included a piece endorsing making Ivermectin available over-the-counter in Iowa. I just read a story about what looks like the disappearance of the ivermectin from Reynold’s bill. The story, written by Laura Belin, comes from a webpage called Bleeding Heartland: An … Continue reading "Ivermectin Bill Looks Like It’s Dead-For Now"
  • OK, Why is Nobody Talking About Friday the 13th Today?13 Mar 2026
Nobody but me, I guess, is talking out loud about Friday the 13th today. I don’t remember anybody mentioning it last month when it occurred either. And it’s going to happen again this year in November. That’ll make 3 times Friday the 13th happens in a single year. And tomorrow’s Svengoolie movie is “Friday the … Continue reading "OK, Why is Nobody Talking About Friday the 13th Today?"

Psychiatric Times More Than Medicine: A Journey of Juggling

National Weather Service

“God, how we get our fingers in each other’s clay.” --Ray Bradbury, from his novel Something Wicked This Way Comes

It is wise to direct your anger towards problems-not people; to focus your energies on answers-not excuses.-William Arthur Ward

Plan for retirement, even if you don’t plan to retire. This means sound financial planning, developing other interests, and nurturing your relationships with significant others. Retire, even if you are not retired. Take enough time off periodically, and completely, with no connections to work, so that you can feel emotionally free from concerns about patients and practice. Of course, there is no reason to retire if you really love your work and relationships just as they are.-H. Steven Moffic, MD See original article in Psychiatric Times
