I got a few pictures last night around 9:00 p.m. or so of the full (or nearly so) Buck Moon. Although the best night would have been on the 29^th, the pictures still showed the moon having a rusty reddish-orange color. This morning at around 5:00 a.m., it was the usual whitish color.

I saw reports on the web that explain the reddish-orange color. It’s partly because of the smoke blowing from wildfires in Canada. The other reason is because when it’s lower on the horizon where the air is thicker and the light gets scattered in the denser air. So the Buck Moon isn’t always cherry colored.

Last night, I saw a plane fly back and forth just under the moon when it was still coming up in the western sky. I’m pretty sure the pilot was checking out the Buck Moon. I wasn’t quick enough to grab the camera to get a shot of it.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac has a pretty good article about the full Buck Moon.

It’s called the Buck Moon because the male deer (buck) has fully-grown antlers this time of year. There are other names that are descriptive of how it looks, like Raspberry Moon.

This reminds me of the bucks fighting over the does video I got a little over 2 years ago.
