Reblog of the Post “When Do We Get Out of the Woods?”

, , ,

This is a different kind of reblog of the post “When Do We Get Out of the Woods” because I want to mention my invented lyrics for the song from the film “The Wizard of Oz” when Dorothy and the oddballs get out of the haunted woods into the land of Oz.

The original song is titled “Optimistic Voices” but the day I invented new lyrics was when we visited Terry Trueblood Recreation Area when the gnats were so thick you could hide behind the cloud of them in the air. That’s the May 6, 2025 post titled “Attack of the Killer Gnats.”

My version of the lyrics of “Optimistic Voices”:

You’re out of the woods

You’re out of the dark

Away from the flies

Step into the sun

Escaping the gnats dive-bombing your eyes

Keep straight ahead for the least buggiest place

Off your face the crap from swarming flies

Hold onto to your breath

Hold onto your nose

Hold onto your ears

Stop breathing in gnats and run like crazy…

The reason this occurs to me is that Sena and I were feeling pretty cooped up in the hotel where we were staying while waiting for completion of construction of our new house in 2024. We were there for a couple of months. When the house was finally done, it was sort of like coming out of the woods and escaping the gnats.

  1. Unless there is a high wind – the walking trail through our wooded area is a bug infested nightmare – gnats, biting flies, you name it. If we go it is with insect netting over the head and an electrified tennis racket.

    1. I have never heard of electrified tennis rackets! I had to look it up on the web and found them. Bug zapper tennis rackets! How cool is that?

      1. Very common here. I just saw a couple walk past carrying one. Works best to pass it up over your head while walking and wave it around. We also use inexpensive bug mesh hoods that you can get at Fleet Farm.
