Hey, it’s Cow Week from Mike Waters KOKZ 105.7 and he’s hanging out at New Day Dairy GuestBarn in Clarksville. Remember, it’s National Dairy Month. He’s taking requests for tunes that have cowbell sounds in them and substituting the word “cow” or some synonym for that in song titles and whatnot. One caller suggested “I heard it through the bovine” (for “I heard it through the grapevine” by Marvin Gaye). That cracks me up!
I looked in a lot of dusty corners on the internet and the only song about cows I could find that made any kind of sense was a cover by Willie Nelson of an old thing called “Milk Cow Blues.” It was a live performance from Austin City Limits in 1981. That was the year we moved to Ames, Iowa from Mason City so I could work on my Bachelor’s degree at Iowa State University. We used to watch Austin City Limits and the ISU based Blues at the Maintenance Shop.
The feelgood part of the show this morning was the story about the students at Starmont High School who honored Elkader student Eli Belzer by dedicating the song “Don’t Stop Believin’” to this 11-year-old diagnosed with Stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma seven years ago. The Starmont name is made from Strawberry Point, LaMont, and Arlington. Our best to Eli.
