May is Mental Health Month: Today the Topic is Finding Awe

Since May is Mental Health Month, the topic for today is finding awe. I don’t think of it as mainly feeling small in the face of the grandeur of creation. The point is we’re a part of creation. We rightly could feel awe at ourselves just about everywhere we happen to be.

We took a trip to Niagara Falls about 11 years ago. That’s something that inspired awe in us. When you think about all the people who tried to roll over the falls in a barrel, it stupefies me that anyone would react to such a marvelous, breath-taking spectacle as Niagara Falls that way just to get attention for a thrill ride—provided you don’t die in the attempt.

Seeing the falls from a helicopter as we did was even more awe-inspiring. We felt small by comparison, yet still a part of the miracle. We gazed at it and talking about it seemed unnecessary.
