  • Today is National Grammar Day So Let’s Hear it for Will Strunks’ Little Book!4 Mar 2026
Sena just told me that it’s National Grammar Day today, which was news to me, but irregardless (whoops, that’s ungrammatical! It’s regardless or off comes your head), I mean regardless, grammar is pretty important. This reminds me of the essayist, E.B. White, who wrote an essay about his former teacher, Will Strunk Jr. White admired … Continue reading "Today is National Grammar Day So Let’s Hear it for Will Strunks’ Little Book!"
  • First Sight of Robins Today!4 Mar 2026
I caught sight of a couple of robins today and managed to get a fair snapshot of one. They’re casing our back yard for nesting sites. I’m also wondering if they’ll attack their reflections in our windows now that Sena covered them with plastic overlays last year. So far, they sit high up in the … Continue reading "First Sight of Robins Today!"
  • Clinical Problems in Consultation Psychiatry and The Break-Dancing Koala Bear3 Mar 2026
I ran across an old Clinical Problems in Consultation Psychiatry (CPCP) presentation by a couple of sharp medical students in 2014. They presented it at one of my morning consult rounds and it’s about Charles Bonnet Syndrome. They did a very nice job and it compares fairly well with the University of Iowa Ophthalmology Dept … Continue reading "Clinical Problems in Consultation Psychiatry and The Break-Dancing Koala Bear"
  • Do We Really Need Artificial Intelligence to Help People Who Are Demoralized?2 Mar 2026
I was just going through the many files on one of my old thumb drives that I still keep after I retired from consultation-liaison psychiatry over 5 years ago. I found a file that I must have typed from a source on how to help medically ill persons who are demoralized. Demoralization is not the … Continue reading "Do We Really Need Artificial Intelligence to Help People Who Are Demoralized?"
  • Svengoolie Show Movie: “The War of the Worlds”1 Mar 2026
We watched the 1953 movie “War of the Worlds” last night. I can vaguely remember seeing the remake starting Tom Cruise years ago. I ran across a free pdf of H.G. Wells novel “The War of the worlds, published in 1898 and quickly read it today for the first time. Apparently, it was a pretty … Continue reading "Svengoolie Show Movie: “The War of the Worlds”"
  • The Big Mo Blues Show Highlights Women Singers28 Feb 2026
Last night the Big Mo Blues Show focused on women vocalists, partly because he said he got phone calls urging him to play more music from female performers. It was an exceptionally good show and I can mention 3 of the women singers who really impressed me. Early in the show, he played a song … Continue reading "The Big Mo Blues Show Highlights Women Singers"

Psychiatric Times More Than Medicine: A Journey of Juggling

National Weather Service

“God, how we get our fingers in each other’s clay.” --Ray Bradbury, from his novel Something Wicked This Way Comes

It is wise to direct your anger towards problems-not people; to focus your energies on answers-not excuses.-William Arthur Ward

Plan for retirement, even if you don’t plan to retire. This means sound financial planning, developing other interests, and nurturing your relationships with significant others. Retire, even if you are not retired. Take enough time off periodically, and completely, with no connections to work, so that you can feel emotionally free from concerns about patients and practice. Of course, there is no reason to retire if you really love your work and relationships just as they are.-H. Steven Moffic, MD See original article in Psychiatric Times
